Senderos (Spanish for “paths”) are a collection of pieces inspired by Jorge Luis Borges’ The Garden of Forking Paths. These pieces were composed by Gabriel Bolaños for members of the ASU Symphony Orchestra and ASU Wind Bands. Matt Gilbert crafted the website and user interface.

In these works, the video is the score: musicians interpret the graphic notation freely, leading to many different possible outcomes. We invite you to explore various combinations of these interpretations to generate your own unique, personal musical path.

Select a Sendero from the drop-down menu. Press play and click on the buttons to listen to different interpretations of the color-coded parts: feel free to mix and match in real-time. To listen to multiple interpretations of the same part, click on the button labelled “multiple.”

“...[Ts’ui Pen] did not think of time as absolute and uniform. He believed in an infinite series of times, in a dizzily growing ever expanding network of diverging, converging and parallel times. This web of time- the strands of which approach one another, bifurcate, intersect or ignore each other through the centuries- embraces every possibility. We do not exist in most of them.”
